About ASHE data
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) collects information on actual payments made to the employee and the hours on which this pay was calculated. It is based on employer responses for a 1% sample of employee jobs across the UK. Earnings estimates based on ASHE data are for employees only. Self-employed earnings are not available from this data source. All estimates for the most recent year are provisional. Estimates for the previous year have been revised by ONS since they were first published.
The ONS Income and earnings statistics guide explains the relationship between income and earnings data and points to data sources other than ASHE.
Reports
The ONS produces annual Official Statistics reports using ASHE data:
- Employee earnings in the UK Statistical bulletins – Office for National Statistics
- Gender pay gap in the UK – Office for National Statistics*
- Low and high pay in the UK – Office for National Statistics
The Scottish Government uses ASHE data to produce an annual earnings report for Scotland.
*Note that the latest ONS Gender Pay gap estimates may differ from those in the dashboard by up to 0.1percentage points because the ONS calculate the gap using (unpublished) unrounded earnings, whereas we used the published earnings which are rounded to the nearest £0.01.
Spreadsheets
The ONS produce a range of tables in spreadsheets. A guide to the tables is available.
